Children's Oral Hygiene

Giving your child’s smile a bright future

The best start to healthy adult teeth is with strong and healthy baby teeth. Although your child’s primary teeth will fall out naturally, they are still susceptible to decay and gum disease and require a thorough daily oral health routine.

Primary teeth that fall out too early can lead to permanent adult coming through crooked and requiring extensive orthodontic treatment to correct their misalignment.

For babies without teeth, you should wipe their gums with a moist cloth to remove any milk build-up.

For children 18 months to 6 years, use a very light smear of children’s low-fluoride toothpaste on a soft toothbrush. When your child is around 6 years old use a pea-sized amount of standard fluoride toothpaste.

Although young children want to be independent and brush their own teeth, they often do not have the strength or dexterity to hold their tooth brush firmly and brush effectively. After they have brushed their teeth themselves, stand behind them and go over their teeth once more to make sure no area has been missed.

It’s also important that you teach your child to spit out the toothpaste and not swallow it. There is also no need to rinse after brushing with a children’s toothpaste.
