Root Canal Therapy in Midland

Relax, it’s just a root canal

Root Canal Therapy is the dental procedure that causes the most apprehension.

With modern dental techniques, specially designed very fine instruments and anaesthetic options, the team at Helena Street Dental Midland can complete root canal therapy quickly and without discomfort.

A tooth may require root canal therapy because of an infection caused by severe decay, gum disease or an accident has damaged the tooth’s nerve, resulting in the need for its removal.

Root Canal Therapy involves isolating the tooth with a rubber sheet called a ‘dam’ to prevent any infection from spreading. Then any tooth decay is removed and a channel is created so the nerve can be removed using very fine instruments.

A tooth can have one or up to four canals. The root canals are re-shaped, cleaned and sterilised. Once the tooth is free of any sign of infection, each root canal is filled with a special rubber based compound to strengthen it so it doesn’t remain hollow.

As the procedure often requires removing a large amount of the tooth, a crown is placed to restore strength and function. Depending on the location of the tooth this may be a porcelain crown for front teeth or a gold or alloy based crown for back teeth. Sometimes a titanium post may also be used to provide additional strength.

If you’re apprehensive about root canal therapy or any other dental treatment, we invite you to talk with our dental team at Helena Street Dental Midland. They will happily explain the procedure in detail to ease your concerns.
