Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Jaw Muscle and TMJ Pain

There are a thousand movements you do every day without even thinking about them. Talking, yawning, chewing, moving your mouth side to side, all this can only be achieved because of one thing, your Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ).

Located just in front of your ears it’s one of the most used joints in your body and is what connects your jawbone to your skull.

A jaw that’s misaligned can strain facial muscles and result in recurring headaches, face, and neck or shoulder pain. This is known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Damage to the jaw from an accident or sporting injury as well as the presence of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the jaw joint can also be contributing factors.

To determine correct jaw alignment and eliminate TMD as being the cause of any pain or discomfort, the Helena Street Dental Midland team will complete a comprehensive physical examination and oral health assessment. This may also involve taking detailed x-rays and a review your medical history.

To make an appointment, call us on (08) 9250 3100. You can also visit us at our practice which is located at 2/42 Victoria Street, Midland WA 6056.
