Root Canal Therapy in Midland

Relax — it’s just a root canal

Root canal therapy has a reputation for being intimidating, but with modern dental techniques, the procedure is usually straightforward and no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.

At Helena Street Dental, we use advanced equipment, gentle methods, and effective local anaesthetic to ensure your treatment is completed as comfortably and efficiently as possible.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy (also known as endodontic treatment) is a procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed inside its root. Instead of removing the entire tooth, we carefully clean out the damaged tissue, disinfect the area, and seal it to prevent further infection — allowing you to keep your natural tooth for years to come.

Why would I need a root canal?

A root canal may be needed when the nerve or pulp of a tooth becomes infected or damaged. This can happen due to:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • Gum disease
  • Trauma or injury to the tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth

When the inner nerve becomes infected, it can cause pain, swelling, and sensitivity. If left untreated, it can lead to an abscess or even tooth loss — which is why early treatment is so important.

What happens during the procedure?

We’ll begin by isolating the affected tooth with a small rubber sheet called a dental dam, which helps prevent bacteria from spreading.

Next, we carefully remove any decay and create a small opening to access the root canals inside the tooth. Using very fine instruments, we clean and shape the canals, remove the infected tissue, and sterilise the area.

Once the canals are completely clean, they’re filled with a rubber-like material that seals and strengthens the tooth from within.

In most cases, we recommend placing a crown over the treated tooth to restore its full strength and function — especially for back teeth that handle more pressure.

Will the procedure hurt?

With modern techniques and local anaesthetic, root canal therapy is usually pain-free. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and simple the procedure feels compared to what they expected.

Our caring team will check in with you throughout your appointment to make sure you’re completely at ease.

What happens after treatment?

You may experience mild tenderness for a day or two after treatment, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Once the final restoration (such as a crown) is placed, your tooth will look and function like a natural, healthy tooth again. With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last for many years.

How can I avoid needing a root canal?

Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are the best ways to prevent tooth decay and infection. By catching small issues early, we can treat them before they reach the nerve or pulp of the tooth.
