Easy Summer Tips to Keep Kids Smiles Bright

Summer is a time when memories are made, especially during childhood. We all probably remember seemingly endless summer days packed with fun activities and freedom from everyday routines. It is hardly surprising that regular dental care can sometimes take a back seat at this time of year, but it is vital to maintain good oral care year-round, and slipping out of regular schedules now can make it harder to stick to later when school resumes. Follow our easy tips to help your child maintain a bright, healthy smile throughout the summer.

Ensure Regular Brushing and Flossing is Non-Negotiable

Everyday routines are inevitably disrupted during the summer, but ensure your child knows that regular toothbrushing and flossing are non-negotiable. Make sure they understand why it is important to brush twice a day and floss daily, and set a regular time for this task every day, even if you are travelling or visiting family or friends. If your child is likely to skip flossing, make a sticker chart with them so they get a reward for brushing and flossing for a set period of time. Older children might prefer to set reminders on their phone.

Stock Up on Healthy Summer Snacks

Tasty summer treats like ice cream and fizzy drinks are tempting, but try to ensure they aren’t enjoyed too often, limiting the amount of sugar your kid consumes. Snacking on these foods is especially bad for teeth, as the more frequently they snack, the longer their teeth are bathed in sugars, increasing the risk of cavities. Instead, make the most of fresh fruits, and why not look for new and exotic fruits that are fun to try. Other good snacks include crunchy veggies with a yoghurt-based dip or hummus, and cheese is fantastic for teeth, providing a decent amount of calcium and protein.

Stay Hydrated with Fresh, Cool Water

Water really is the best way to stay well-hydrated, and there is nothing wrong with ordinary tap water. Keep a pitcher of cool water in the fridge and purchase a refillable water bottle for every family member. Get your kid to choose their own, so they will want to use it and ensure it is topped up frequently.

Get Custom-Made Sports Mouthguards

Many children love to play sports, especially during the summer, and it’s a great way to get plenty of exercise. However, if your child plays contact sports or any sports where they could take a knock to the mouth, ensure they have a well-fitting custom-made mouthguard. We can make and fit your child’s mouthguard, ensuring it is comfortable to wear, and they can even choose their own colour, perhaps to match their team. A custom sports mouthguard is economical and effective and could save your child a lifetime of costly restorative dental care.

Pack an Emergency Dental Kit

If you are out and about, make sure you are prepared for any dental emergencies by packing a small kit that includes saline solution and a small airtight container, just in case anyone knocks out a tooth, as well as pain relief. Don’t forget we are always at the end of the phone to provide useful advice.
